Ripe for Harvest

For more than twenty-six years, Sergio Danon has faithfully shared the gospel among the Jewish community of Rio de Janeiro.

As International Mission to Jewish People's only missionary in Brazil, Sergio has devoted his life to opening the Scriptures, answering difficult questions, discipling believers, and helping Jewish people discover that Jesus is their promised Messiah.

Like much missionary work, the ministry is often quiet and deeply personal. It takes place through conversations, Bible studies, phone calls, and long-term relationships that sometimes develop over many years.

Recently, one of those relationships led to a remarkable moment.

A Jewish man named Michael had spent months studying the Scriptures with Sergio. While he was willing to discuss Jesus, he struggled to accept His deity. Together they explored passages from Isaiah, Jeremiah, the Gospels, and the New Testament, carefully examining what the Bible teaches about the Messiah.

Week after week the conversations continued. Then one day Michael fell silent.

Finally, he said: “After all the overwhelming evidence, I can no longer deny the deity of Jesus.”

Soon afterwards, Michael placed his faith in Jesus.

Today he is married, growing in his faith, and continuing his journey as a disciple of Christ.

Stories like Michael's remind us that faithful witness and patient discipleship still bear fruit.

Not every story, however, reaches such a clear conclusion.For many years Sergio maintained a friendship with a Jewish woman named Gabby. When she was diagnosed with cancer, he stayed in regular contact, encouraging her from the Scriptures and pointing her towards the hope found in Christ.

Although she passed away without openly professing faith, her story did not end there.

Following her death, her son Ari contacted Sergio to thank him for the care and encouragement he had shown to his mother.

Years earlier, Sergio had briefly studied the Bible with Ari when he was a young man. Now, in a very different season of life, that relationship has been renewed.

Today Sergio continues building that friendship and trusting God to work through His Word.

This is the reality of missionary work among Jewish people. It often requires years of prayer, patience, and faithful conversation. Yet even in difficult circumstances, God continues opening doors.

As questions of identity, suffering, belonging, and hope become increasingly significant for many Jewish people around the world, opportunities for meaningful gospel conversations continue to emerge.

Sergio finds himself in those conversations every week.

Yet despite these opportunities, there is currently a £40,000 shortfall in the support needed to sustain this ministry.

As International Mission to Jewish People's only missionary in Brazil, Sergio plays a vital role in reaching one of South America's largest Jewish communities with the message of Jesus.
