Holocaust Memorial Day 2026: Bridging Generations

Each year on 27th January, Holocaust Memorial Day calls us to remember the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered in the Holocaust, and the millions more who suffered through antisemitism, hatred and genocide. Marked on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, this day reminds us that remembrance is both a duty and a shared responsibility.

As Holocaust survivors become fewer, the task of remembrance does not end - it is passed on to their children, their grandchildren, and to all of us. Today, that responsibility is lived out not only through memory, but through presence. International Mission to Jewish People missionaries continue to walk alongside Holocaust survivors in Israel, listening to their stories, offering care, and faithfully witnessing with compassion and respect. This living connection across generations lies at the heart of the 2026 Holocaust Memorial Day theme, Bridging Generations.

Alongside tragedy, we also remember courage. One of the remarkable stories connected with the Barbican Mission to the Jews (now International Mission to Jewish People) was the organised by Rev. Davidson, the Barbican Mission's director - One of the earliest air evacuations of Jewish children from Prague to safety in England in January 1939. Unlike most of the Kindertransport efforts, which brought children by train, these missions organised flights that carried groups of Jewish children out of danger before the war.

Holocaust Memorial Day is not just about the past. Antisemitism still exists today, and remembrance calls each generation to challenge it. As Christians, we believe the ultimate answer to hatred is found in the love, justice and mercy of Jesus the Messiah, who calls us to love our neighbour and stand against injustice.

On this Holocaust Memorial Day, we remember, we grieve, and we recommit ourselves to bridging generations through remembrance, compassion and action through sharing the good news of Jesus.
